Real world has appeared shows five different translations of the same speech bubble from a 90’s Japanese shoujo manga magazine (shoujo is the Japanese term for comics marketed towards young girls). The translations were made using Google Translate's lens function, which makes it possible to translate text and other written languages in images.
Using the technology, there is often a clear distance between input and output - the translations are often incomprehensible, ambivalent and fragmented in meaning and linguistic understanding. A Possibility for new meanings to arise in the space between original, translation, technology and reader.
The DC MAGAZINE is published by Julie Hvass and was available for free at its release event at Kunsthal Aarhus, March 1, 2024.
